Tips For Facilitating Photoshoots

Photoshoots can be an expensive thing or not; it depends what vision you want and you always start with that theme. If you want to hire a photographer or if you want to do the photography yourself, if you want to find models in your area, or if you know people who want to help you with your vision, the location you want, etc.

It can go low budget or high budget and with experience with both I’d love to share what I’ve learned so far. And am looking forward to all I learn as I continue to grow my career.

Low budget; reach out to people you know, friends, family, friends of friends, ask their comfortability in front of the camera. See if they want to help you with your vision. Sometimes in return for photoshoots like this I would make a necklace, or piece of jewelry to give those who helped me along the way. Giving a little something back shows the value put in to your work.

Doing the photography yourself; watch YouTube videos about your camera and lighting tricks. There are even commonly guides to photography at thrift-stores or used book stores. When starting with your theme, a Pinterest board for inspiration will go a long way in helping you stick to that vision. Doing these beforehand and for yourself not only helps you accomplish your vision but helps you grow in ways you couldn’t imagine.

High budget; Hiring a photographer, maybe hiring models and even sometimes renting a studio space.

My first experience with this was about 3 years ago, I facilitated a photoshoot in Toronto for a creative community I was building. I found a photographer with a vision for their photography that matched the theme I was going for, and booked time in a studio space.

Organizing everything before hand is so necessary to ensure a smooth process. The time you’re supposed to meet, where to meet, what everyone is supposed to bring, how you want the models to show up in regard to their makeup, hair and wardrobe. The order the photoshoot will unfold, everything to the last detail, being prepared for all of this beforehand helps so no one gets uncomfortable, bored or side-tracked.

Note; create contracts for your models regardless of whether you think you know them or not, you could end up spending a lot of money to not be able to use any of the photos..

Regardless Plan Plan Plan; if you want to know further in to detail on everything I plan when doing my high budget and low budget photoshoots, DM me for clarity!
